This project involved designing a book for the doctorate thesis Suffering Souls, Suffering Society, which explores Empathy Processing and Oxytocin Effects on Socio-Emotional Behavior in Psychopathy. The challenge was to transform traditionally straightforward academic content into an engaging, visually compelling piece — balancing strong typographic design with practicality to ensure readability, especially for an older, academically inclined audience.
A larger typographic treatment, inspired by Patrick Bateman’s business card, was developed to convey stark, clean modernity fitting the subject matter. A strong grid system was implemented to maintain consistency and precision across the 300-page book, ensuring text and visuals were well-organized for optimal readability. Additionally, a diagrammatic system was designed to simplify complex information, making key concepts more accessible.
Accompanying the book was a promotional magazine that reimagined excerpts in a more graphic and abstract way. Serving as a visual teaser, the magazine bridged the academic and visual worlds, offering an engaging, stylized preview of the book’s core concepts.
